Finnish authorities said on Tuesday that a 12-year-old gunman opened fire in a classroom at Viertola school in Vantaa, north of Helsinki, killing at least one minor and seriously injuring two others.

Police said they detained the minor at 09:58 in the Siltamaki district in northern Helsinki, who had fled the scene earlier after the shooting.

Finnish media quoted parents as saying they arrived at the scene within nine minutes and saw the three victims.

Local police chief Tomi Salosyrja said one of the victims died immediately from his injuries at the school and the other two were taken to a hospital in the capital.

The suspect admitted to the shooting at the school and the gun was seized, according to police.

The deceased was also 12 years old.

Officials have also opened an investigation into a fatal shooting at a school in Finland.

Under national law, persons under the age of 15 are not criminally responsible and will be handed over to social services after interrogation.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo called the shootings “deeply disturbing” and said it was clear that too many young people were struggling with mental health: “We must be able to address these issues as quickly as possible.”

President Alexander Stubb also expressed shock at the shooting and declared a day of mourning across Finland.

Education Minister Anna-Maja Henriksson told reporters what happened was a huge tragedy. She was on the verge of tears as she described the situation.

“A 12-year-old will never come home from school again,” she said.
