Australia announces curfew for under-18s after riots in Alice Springs

A nighttime curfew has been announced for all residents under the age of 18 in the remote central Australian town of Alice Springs following a violent brawl.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Eva Lawler said a state of emergency would be imposed in the city center and 58 additional police officers would be deployed to deter crime and anti-social behavior.

The curfew will be in place from 6pm to 6am on Wednesdays for the next two weeks.

“The community has had enough and I have had enough,” Lawler said at a press conference on Wednesday, according to Australian media. “We want Alice Springs to be a safe place.”

The latest disturbances were reported on Tuesday after the funeral of an 18-year-old man who died two weeks ago while riding in an allegedly stolen vehicle.

Videos and photos shared on social media showed chaotic scenes as dozens of people gathered outside a pub called Todd’s Tavern, throwing bricks and trying to break in while patrons hid inside.

Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy said the crash had reignited a family feud and about 150 people were involved in the disturbance. Five people were arrested and at least 50 weapons were seized.

“The action is going to be quick,” Murphy said. “We will identify those responsible and bring them before the courts to hold them accountable for their actions.”

Alice Springs is located nearly 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) south of the Northern Territory’s capital Darwin and has a population of approximately 26,000 people. About a fifth of those are from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, some of whom live in so-called camps on the edge of towns.
