Azerbaijan says Armenia attempted to conduct reconnaissance flights over Tovuz region

Azerbaijan said on Monday that Armenia attempted to conduct a reconnaissance flight in the Tovuz region in the country’s northwest.

A statement from the Ministry of Defense said that the Armenian army attempted to use a quadcopter to fly near the settlement of Esrik.

“The drones discovered with vigilance by our troops were neutralized through special technical means,” the ministry added.

Relations between Baku and Yerevan have been tense since Armenian forces occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan, and seven neighboring regions in 1991.

Azerbaijan liberated most of its territory in a war in autumn 2020 that ended with a Russian-brokered peace deal that also opened the door to normalization.

Azerbaijan established full sovereignty in Karabakh following an “anti-terrorist operation” in September 2023, after which separatist forces in the region capitulated.
