Biden and Trump will face off in U.S. election rematch after winning party nomination

U.S. President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump are set for a general election rematch in November after securing their respective parties’ nominations.

Tuesday’s primaries in Georgia, Mississippi and Washington state gave Biden the Democratic nomination and Trump the Republican endorsement.

Biden, who faced no serious competition within the party, met the 1,968 delegate threshold needed to clinch the nomination, which was also surpassed by Trump’s last rival, Nikki Haley, who dropped out of the race last week. Required 1,215 delegates. The pair will be formally nominated at party conferences in August and July respectively.

The widely expected outcome set off the first rematch of a U.S. presidential election in nearly 70 years and a battle between two candidates that polls showed many voters did not want.

The 81-year-old Biden is already the oldest president in U.S. history, while the 77-year-old Trump faces 91 felony charges in four criminal cases, involving alleged crimes such as handling confidential documents and trying to overturn the 2020 election. .

Their rematch will almost certainly deepen political and cultural divisions in the country as it grapples with the eight-month election ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

In a statement, Biden celebrated the nomination while casting Trump as a serious threat to democracy, accusing him of “engaging in a campaign of resentment, revenge and revenge that threatens the very idea of America.”

Trump celebrated what he called a “great day of victory” in a video posted on social media.

“But now we have to get back to work because we have the worst president in the history of our country,” Trump said of Biden. “So, we’re not going to take the time to celebrate. When the election is over in eight months We will celebrate.”
