Donald Trump makes last-ditch effort to delay hush money trial

Former President Donald Trump is trying to delay an upcoming trial in New York, where he faces charges of hush money payments to porn stars.

The former president wants the Manhattan court to wait until the Supreme Court rules on his claim for “presidential immunity” in a separate criminal case.

The Manhattan trial will take place on March 25. The case stems from an incident that occurred before Donald Trump took office.

During this time, he allegedly paid a porn star to cover up a 2016 affair. The key message, however, relates to Trump’s post-election activities.

Trump attorneys Todd Branch and Susan Necheles called on Judge Juan Merchant to delay the trial until the Supreme Court rules on the immunity sought by the former president. They expressed concern about evidence from Trump’s presidency, including a 2018 “pressure campaign” against his former lawyer Michael Cohen.

Lawyers argued that Trump should enjoy presidential immunity for comments he made on his official Twitter account while he was president. They worry that without such immunity, future presidents could be manipulated by threats of prosecution by political opponents.

This is not the first time Trump has used the presidential immunity argument. He has invoked that argument in all four criminal cases, ranging from efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia to alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving the White House.

Legal experts say Trump’s immunity claim is unlikely to succeed. However, they added, he effectively delayed the federal election case for months.

The Supreme Court will hold oral arguments on the matter on April 25, with a decision expected in June.

The office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is prosecuting Trump, has not yet commented on the request to delay the trial. Special counsel Jack Smith recently called his immunity argument “completely unreasonable and difficult to understand except as part of a strategic delay effort.”
