Fire breaks out in Istanbul nightclub during renovation, 29 killed



A fire broke out in a nightclub in Istanbul, killing at least 29 people and injuring many others.

The fire broke out during renovations of the Masquerade nightclub on the ground floor and basement of a 16-storey residential building in the city’s Guerretepe district.

The fire has been extinguished and Istanbul Governor Davut Gul said an investigation was ongoing.

It is believed the victim was involved in the renovation work.

The Istanbul governor’s office said in a statement that at least one person was being treated in hospital.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunk said police detained five people for questioning, including the club manager and a person in charge of renovations.

Video posted by the Istanbul Fire Department on X showed crews rushing to the scene and several fire trucks and ambulances surrounding the smoking building entrance.

“May God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives, and I wish our injured a speedy recovery,” Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said on X.

Imamoglu added that authorities were inspecting the entire building to assess its safety.
