Hamas says Israeli air strikes on Gaza killed foreign aid workers

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least five employees of the non-governmental organization World Central Kitchen (WCK), including foreigners, the Hamas-controlled Gaza government media office said.

A spokesman for the media office said those killed in the incident in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza included Polish, Australian and British citizens, as well as a Palestinian.

WCK posted on Aid workers and civilians should never be targeted.”

Hamas said in a statement that the attack was aimed at “intimidating” staff of international humanitarian agencies and preventing them from carrying out their tasks.

Commenting on the reports, the Israeli military said a thorough review was being conducted at the highest levels to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“The IDF has made extensive efforts to safely deliver humanitarian aid and has been working closely with WCK in their joint effort to provide food and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” the military statement said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on Tuesday that aid worker Larzami “Zomi” Frankkom was killed in a Gaza airstrike and called for accountability for his death.

The Palestinian enclave’s health ministry said on Monday that Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 32,845 Palestinians and injured 75,392 since October 7.

A foreign ministry statement added that 63 Palestinians had been killed and 94 injured in the past 24 hours.
