Russia calls Islamophobia ‘an unacceptable form of racism’

Russia considers Islamophobia “an unacceptable form of racism,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

Zakharova told a news conference in Moscow that Russia supports the approach of Muslim countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on this issue.

“We oppose discrimination and harassment against Muslims based on their religious beliefs and advocate ensuring religious freedom on the basis of respecting the individual and collective rights of believers,” she said.

Zakharova pledged Russia’s support for the draft resolution titled “Measures to Combat Islamophobia” proposed by Muslim countries at the United Nations General Assembly, which is dedicated to the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, which is celebrated annually on March 15.

She noted that the resolution provides for respect for Islam as part of the principles of cultural and religious diversity and establishes the mandate of a United Nations special envoy to combat this form of religious intolerance.

“Russia is a co-sponsor of the draft resolution,” she said.

Last week, Zakharova slammed Islamophobia in Europe, saying it had reached “unprecedented proportions” in the Council of Europe parliament.
