Russia says no contact with West after concert hall attack

The Kremlin said on Monday that there was currently no contact between Russia and the West following the shooting at Krokus City Hall that killed at least 137 people and injured more than 180.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that while there was no contact with Western countries, President Putin had several phone conversations with world leaders over the past day, focusing on strengthening bilateral counterterrorism cooperation.

Asked whether the United States had warned Russia about the concert hall attack, Peskov said the intelligence was provided to special services but could not be disclosed because it was sensitive information.

Peskov said the Kremlin was not currently involved in discussions to lift the moratorium on the death penalty, a step that Russian lawmakers were discussing in parliament.

The spokesman declined to identify those detained in the shooting investigation and said the investigation was ongoing.

Asked about the Daesh/Islamic State group’s claims of responsibility for the attack, Peskov urged reliance on information from law enforcement agencies.

At least 137 people were killed and more than 180 injured when gunmen opened fire on Friday as the rock band Picnic was about to perform at Crocus Town Hall in the Moscow region.

The Investigative Committee said it detained 11 people, including four perpetrators, in the Bryansk border area heading to Ukraine.

Moscow’s Basman District Court late Sunday charged four perpetrators with terrorism and approved their pretrial detention until May 22.
