Saudi Arabia sees Ramadan moon

Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced the sighting of a new lunar new moon, marking the start of the country’s holy month of Ramadan.

News and announcements on social media about the two holy mosques, the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, cited the National Moon Watching Committee to confirm the arrival of the Ramadan new moon.

People in Saudi Arabia will fast for the first time tomorrow (Monday).

According to the Khaleej Times, the Saudi Supreme Court announced the discovery of the new moon on Sunday (March 10) night.

Meanwhile, the Ramadan moon was also sighted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) shortly after reports from Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court and the UAE Moon Watching Committee have announced tonight (Sunday) as the expected date for Ramadan, calling on residents to look for the crescent moon and submit reports.

Saudi Arabia is usually the first country to see the moon during the Islamic month, followed by other Arab, Middle Eastern and Western countries and parts of India.

Countries like Pakistan, rest of India, Bangladesh and other Asian countries mark the start of the holy month a day later.

The Muslim world welcomes Ramadan with religious enthusiasm. More than a billion believers will fast during Ramadan to practice patience and self-control while promoting charity and welfare.

Islamic months last 29 or 30 days, and the beginning or end of each month depends on the appearance of the new moon, so there are no specific days for Ramadan each year.

Ramadan is the ninth of the 12 months of the Islamic calendar. Although the Islamic calendar has the same number of months as the Gregorian calendar, since it is based on the orbit of the moon, the Islamic calendar is nearly 10 days shorter.

This is why Ramadan falls at a different time every year according to the Gregorian calendar.
