In a major blow to Russia, Sweden officially became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson handed over final documents to the U.S. government on Thursday. Reuters the report said.

The Scandinavian country’s decision to join NATO after decades of neutrality is a major shift in its security policy. For NATO, the addition of Sweden and Finland, which share a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, is the most important membership in decades.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said “everything changed” after Russia invaded Ukraine, citing polls showing a dramatic shift in Swedish public opinion about joining NATO.

“The Swedes realize something very profound, and if Putin is willing to try to wipe a neighbor off the map, he probably won’t stop there,” he said.

In response to Sweden’s move, Russia threatened unspecified “political and military-technical countermeasures.”

While Finland joined the alliance last year, Sweden has been waiting as Turkey and Hungary, which have friendly relations with Russia, delayed ratifying Sweden’s membership.

Turkey approved Sweden’s application in January, while Hungary delayed its decision until Kristersson made a goodwill visit to Budapest in February, where the two countries reached a deal on fighter jets.
