Former President Donald Trump has appealed an $83.3 million defamation verdict in the E. Jean Carroll case to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan. Reuters the report said.

Carroll accused Trump of labeling her a liar after raping her decades ago, leading to the jury’s decision on Jan. 26.

Trump secured $91.63 million in bail from federal insurance companies to support an appeal surrounding a Manhattan jury’s June 2019 ruling that Trump defamed Carroll by denying her rape allegation in the mid-1990s. .

The jury awarded Carroll $18.3 million in damages, including $11 million for reputational harm, $7.3 million for emotional distress, and $65 million in punitive damages. Trump argued that he either owed nothing or had the award significantly reduced.

In addition to this case, Trump faces a $454.2 million judgment in a civil fraud case and is being held on $100 million bail, which New York Attorney General Letitia James insists should cover the entire judgment.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing Carroll’s trial, has not yet ruled on Trump’s motions for a new trial and reduced damages.

Trump’s legal team argued that Kaplan’s decision to exclude Trump’s testimony about his mental state affected the verdict and that the jury instructions on malice were also flawed.

The lengthy appeals process could last years, and Trump and Carroll are both in their 70s.
