Two people walking in Indiana injured after small plane crash: ‘It’s a bad day’

Two people out for a walk were seriously injured after a small private plane crashed into a pavement on Monday morning Delaware County Regional Airport near Muncie, Indiana, according to airport officials.

In a news release, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department said the two victims were walking on a trail near the Muncie Airport just before 10:30 a.m. when a single-engine Piper The plane fell from the sky and crashed En route to Muncie Airport.

Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley said it was unclear whether the pedestrian was struck by the downed plane or by debris from the plane as it hit the treeline surrounding the sidewalk.

The pilot, who was reportedly the only person on board the plane, also suffered serious injuries, officials said. He was trapped in the wreckage and emergency crews arrived at the scene to free the pilot and take them to hospital.

Delaware County Regional Airport spokesman Tim Batty said no emergency landing call was received. They said the pilot, who was not a Muncie native, passed on the first landing and returned when the plane crashed.

The pilot and one of the walkers were taken to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment, officials said.

“It was a bad day,” Stanley said. “They were out exercising, taking a walk, and the next thing you know they were hit by a plane. It’s very unfortunate and our prayers go out to everyone involved.”

Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner told Fox News Digital that it was unclear what caused the crash.

Batty said the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are investigating the incident.
