US submits Gaza “immediate ceasefire” resolution to UN

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States circulated a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for an “immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages” in Gaza.

“Well, in fact, we have now actually introduced a resolution to the United Nations Security Council that does call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages, and we very much hope that countries will support that resolution,” Blinken said.

“I think it will send a strong message, a strong signal,” he told Saudi media on Wednesday night during a visit to Saudi Arabia to discuss Israel’s war on Gaza.

Blinken met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman shortly after arriving in the kingdom on Wednesday, the first leg of a regional tour that will begin on Thursday. Including Egypt, then Israel.

This is his sixth trip to the Middle East since Israel’s brutal war on Gaza began on October 7.

The United States, Israel’s main backer, has previously used its UN Security Council veto to block the world body from calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian territories.

“Of course, we support Israel and its right to self-defense… but at the same time, we have to pay attention to the civilians who are harmed and suffering tremendously, we have to pay attention to them and get them help. The top priority is to protect civilians and provide them with humanitarian assistance. ,” Blinken said.

Since blocking Algeria’s draft resolution calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza in late February, U.S. officials have been negotiating an alternative text focused on supporting diplomatic efforts on the ground for a six-week truce in exchange for the release of hostages.

The text has a slim chance of being approved by the Security Council, and a new version was circulated to council members on Wednesday, according to international media reports.
