US welcomes productive peace talks between India and Pakistan on Kashmir

U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Washington welcomes “productive peace negotiations” between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue, but the speed, scope and nature of any dialogue will be determined by India and Pakistan.

Miller made the comments in response to a question about the United States welcoming future talks between India and Pakistan on all issues, including Kashmir, especially after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz After Sharif took office.

The timing of the greetings is significant as tensions between the two countries persist over various issues.

A State Department spokesman told a news conference that Washington welcomed the prime minister’s statement.

“The United States values its relationship with India and Pakistan, and we want to see them develop productive and peaceful relationships,” Miller said.

“We certainly welcome productive peace talks between India and Pakistan, but the pace, scope and nature of any dialogue is determined by India and Pakistan,” he added.

The Prime Minister of India on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz on being sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of the country.

A statement on Modi’s official X account read: “Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan.”

The United States also welcomed Shehbaz’s return as prime minister and pledged to cooperate with Pakistan’s new government to “promote the common interests of both countries.”

Responding to questions about human rights abuses and corruption in Pakistan, Miller reiterated Washington’s call for respect for human rights.

“So we have made it clear publicly – you have heard me say this many times on this podium, and we have made it clear in private conversations – that we want to see Pakistan respect the human rights of all of its citizens,” the spokesman explain.
