War Observers: Israeli air strikes near Aleppo kill 36 Syrian soldiers

An Israeli attack on Syria’s northern Aleppo province on Friday killed at least 36 Syrian soldiers, according to a war observer.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has an extensive network of sources in Syria, said the attack killed at least “36 Syrian soldiers” and targeted “near Lebanese Hezbollah rocket depots.”

Syria’s state news agency SANA said the pre-dawn attack caused civilian and military casualties.

“At around 1:45 a.m., the Israeli enemy launched an airstrike from the direction of Atriya, southeast of Aleppo,” a Syrian military source told the Syrian News Agency, adding that “civilians and military personnel” were killed and injured in the airstrike. .

The UK-based opposition war monitor SOHR said the attack targeted a Hezbollah missile depot in Jibrin, a southern suburb of Aleppo, close to Aleppo International Airport.

The Observatory said the explosion could still be heard two hours after the attack. Israeli officials did not immediately issue a statement on the attack. Israel has frequently launched attacks on Iran-linked targets in Syria but rarely acknowledged them.

On Thursday, Syrian state media reported that an airstrike near the capital Damascus injured two civilians. Hezbollah has had armed forces in Syria since it entered the conflict and fought alongside government forces.

Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial hub, has been hit by such attacks in the past, shutting down its international airport. Friday’s strike did not affect the airport.

The attacks have escalated over the past five months against the backdrop of the war in Gaza and ongoing clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
