Mother’s Day is a heartfelt tribute to mothers celebrated around the world, celebrated on different dates in different countries, but why?

While some countries celebrate this special day on a fixed date every year, others change it every year.

Today, the UK pays tribute to mothers on Mother’s Day, while in the United Arab Emirates, celebrations are scheduled for March 21. Meanwhile, Ireland and Nigeria will also join in the celebrations this Sunday.

It is worth noting that the United States and India choose a later commemoration event, always held on the second Sunday in May, this year it is May 12.

Greek mythology traces this celebration back to the springtime commemoration of the goddess Rhea, mother of Zeus. In the Middle East, countries such as the United Arab Emirates celebrate the Spring Equinox on March 21.

Inspired by early Christian festivals, Britain and Ireland maintain the tradition of celebrating the fourth Sunday during Lent, usually in March.

The United States established Mother’s Day in 1914, which influenced many countries, including India, New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka, to follow suit and celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.

It is worth noting that there are unique variations, such as Thailand celebrating the holiday on August 12, Indonesia on December 22 in an inclusive way, and France choosing the last Sunday in May.

In Argentina, the third Sunday in October has a historical connection with the ancient celebration date of the Virgin Mary. Russia joined the celebration in the 1940s and designated the last Sunday in November as Mother’s Day.
