Former Connecticut senator and Democratic 2000 vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman has died in New York at the age of 82.
Lieberman, who served in the House of Lords from 1989 to 2013, died of complications from a fall, his family confirmed.
“His beloved wife Hadassah and family were by his side at the time of his passing,” his family said, emphasizing Lieberman’s abiding love for God, family and country.
Notably, Lieberman made history as Al Gore’s running mate in 2000, becoming the first Jewish candidate on a major party’s slate.
Although Lieberman belongs to the Democratic Party, he has been divisive on several issues, particularly his support of the Iraq war and won his final term as an independent in 2006.
Funeral arrangements include a funeral service at Aguda Sholom Congregation in his hometown of Stamford, followed by a memorial service.
